At Hartburn Primary School we provide a rich, stimulating environment in which we encourage and value creativity. Staff have developed a high-quality, sequenced and progressive curriculum containing the key concepts children need to be procedurally fluent in to work and think like professional artists. Our curriculum is engaging, inspiring and challenging; pupils are encouraged to embrace their creativity.
Pupils will study a range of great local and significant artists, architects and designers in history. Our curriculum provides pupils with opportunities to use a wide range of media and for pupils to develop their mastery of art and design techniques. Our staff have high expectations to nurture the next generation of artists and designers.
We recognise that we have pupils of differing ability in all of our classes, and so we provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child, achieving this through a wide range of strategies. Additionally, Art & Design lessons offer the chance for pupils to develop their emotional expression through art, to further enhance their personal, social and emotional development.
All pupils are encouraged to embrace challenge and develop their resilience by expecting, respecting, inspecting and correcting mistakes. The curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to analyse and evaluate their own and others’ work, to provide constructive feedback on ways to improve and the opportunity to adapt and refine their artwork in light of feedback and reflection.
Local and global responsibility is promoted across the school. Pupils develop their knowledge of local and famous artists, designers and craft makers. The curriculum develops a child’s interest and curiosity about art and design through a series of lessons offering skills progression, knowledge progression and offering pupils the opportunity to explore and demonstrate their skills in a variety of ways.
Art and design is loved by teachers and pupils across schools. Our school has identified specialist teachers who deliver the best lessons to our pupils. These teachers have high expectations and quality evidence can be presented in a variety of ways. However, the ‘piece de la resistance’ is to have your work exhibited in our very own Tate gallery – ‘TateHARTBURN’. Pupils strive to achieve their best and to showcase their work or ultimately exhibit their piece of work in our ‘Tate’.
