Ways that you can help your child progress and learn.
Children learn in a variety of ways. They are constantly being challenged and learning from the world around them. Talking with your child about the experiences you are having together is an excellent way of developing not only their vocabulary, but their desire to learn and make them more inquisitive thinkers. At Hartburn, we want children to become inquisitive, independent learners who at a very early age, develop resilience and a deep love for learning which continues for the rest of their life.

At Hartburn, we use an assessment tool to monitor and track the children’s progress. Please see below the end of year expectations for reading, writing and maths.

Homework
In Year 3 and 4, the children will receive English and maths homework every week. For English, most children will receive Reading Plus and a spelling list. On Reading Plus, children will need to complete 1 reading quiz per week. The spellings are also uploaded to Spelling Shed, where the children can play games to help learn the words. Some children will be set paper based grammar activities which will be completed in their homework books. For maths, homework is usually set on MyMaths or, on occasion, paper-based activities will be set. Children can use TT Rockstars support their learning of times tables.

Additional ideas for learning spellings:
- Rainbow writing
- Write them on paper and display around the home
- Writing them in various ways: bubble writing, in sand, in shaving foam, with paint, with chalk, with water…
- Spin the bottle
- Splat the words
- Pyramid words
- Lego words (put letters on each brick)
- Letter magnets
Reading
Your child will read with an adult in school. They will work on their word reading and comprehension skills, daily. Your child will have the opportunity to change their reading book every week. As the length of the books your child is reading increases, they can keep their book for longer in order to finish it. Please continue to share books with your child at home, any book that they are reading can be recorded in their reading record, as it shows them developing their reading for pleasure. Other ways you can help at home is to read sign posts, magazines, leaflets from places you have visited and sub-titles (you can add these to Netflix!)
Writing
At Hartburn, children are expected to use Hartburn Handwriting from the beginning of their writing journey. In Year 3 and 4, the children will begin to earn their pen licence, if they consistently demonstrate correct letter formation and neat presentation. Children will learn to write a variety of genres including adventure stories, myths, newspaper reports, non-chronological reports, biographies, poetry and letters. At home, you can encourage your children to write thank you letters, write cards, lists and diaries. Fine motor skills will also need to be developed further. This can be done through cutting, playing with dough, baking, pegging the washing, catching and popping bubbles, gardening, threading beads and small construction activities.

Maths
Maths is used in every area of everyday life. With all of the concepts the children are taught in maths, we try to make links to the real world and how these skills will help them throughout their lives.
Ideas for promoting maths skills:
- Adding up prices when shopping
- Calculating change
- Telling the time
- Adding numbers on number plates and door numbers
- Setting the table: how many x will you need?
- Recipes: weighing
- Times tables tennis
- Measuring length
- Fractions of food
